My, what shiny teeth you have!

So, yesterday morning found Nadia at her first ever dental appointment.

We're now going to quickly gloss over my sense of guilt that my kid was over 3 1/2 years old before I finally got around to bringing her to the dentist, and instead focus on how well she did.

Cuz folks? She. did. awesome!

We've spent the last couple weeks building up this experience as the adventure of the century. Yay dentist! Won't it be so exciting to be just like the Bernstein Bears, and Little Critter, and all the other characters in the hefty stack of dentist books borrowed from the library? Yay dentist!

Apparently all my mock enthusiasm did the trick, since she's woken up every day this week asking if it can please be dentist day.

Still, I halfway expected her to change her tune once actually there - especially when we arrived and realized that Mrs. Dentist had been replaced with Mr. Dentist a week earlier. Uh-oh. All along the way, Nadia's one and only request...make that, demand...was that she be seen by a lady dentist. Yes, my child is a bit of a sexist. And now my careful selection of this dental office and its female dentist had blown up in my face.

I braced for the meltdown that never came.

Actually, she kinda did too well. She got to go back with the dentist solo since she's a big three year old, with the promise that they'd come get me if there were any problems. So I sat out in the waiting room crossing my fingers that she'd do well, and also crossing my fingers that she'd freak out just enough for me to come back and experience this milestone with her (and capture it all on-camera, of course).

Well, there were no problems. Not a one. Yay Nadia!

There are also no pictures. Not a one. Boo Mommy!

The dental hygienist, dentist and receptionist all gushed about how great she did. Apparently they've never before had a kid this eager to be strapped into the spaceship chair, have her teeth tickled, spit in the sink, and take special teeth pictures.

Makes me wonder why I even bothered to worry about this first dentist trip.

The best part is that her teeth got two thumbs up as well - no sign (yet) of Daddy's soft, cavity-prone teeth or Mommy's lots-of-orthodontic-work-needed teeth. Just two straight rows of pretty pearly whites.

I'm hoping that doesn't change, since I've recently been noticing glimpses of my childhood underbite in her.

Underbite

On the way home, I asked which would be more fun - going to the park or going to the dentist??

Wanna guess which one she picked?

Yep, the dentist.

I have a very strange, dentist-loving child.

How sensational, but really, you know you should take the honours here for preparing her so well! Hooray for Nadia and her pearly whites!!! Also, big thanks to mummy and her sensible eating/brushing habits!

LOL - she picked the dentist over the park - that is too cute!

And, don't feel guilty over the dentist thing - I don't think many people our age went to dentists until a lot older anyway - at least I know I didn't go until I was in school...I think the little kid to the dentist thing is fairly new - probably a good idea, but not the end of the world!

And, I don't plan to have Caden go to the dentist until he's about 3 because he would FREAK out if they tried to mess around with him right now!!!

Yay Nadia!!!! That is so great! Okay, now I really need to get going and make an appt. for Amanda. She is terrified. I'd better get some library books like you did!

Don't worry...Adam still hasn't been. I do need to make that apart of my priorities!

Clyde was also a fan. He got his picture taken for the no cavity wall.
Don't feel guilty. Some kids NEVER go to the dentist unless something happens.

YEAH Nadia! Nice job! The girls were looking over my shoulder while I was reading this and they are VERY interested in getting to go back with the dentist by themselves! I may have to try it when we go back in - in a few weeks!

Just when I think I can't love Nadia anymore...I do.

That is so awesome. She doesn't have decay. Yipee. Both our children got daddies decay prone teeth instead of my never, ever had a cavity teeth. They both had decay at 2 years old and it was traumatic for all. So I am sooooo very excited for you both.

Sounds great. :) I'm not sure I'd be ready to send her back on her own...nope. I'm not ready for her to grow up.

That's great that she did so well! Did they give her a sticker or a small toy? Our dentist does that and it makes it a bit more fun for our kids. I don't think you were late either. I think you are supposed to bring them in until three, right? So...not really late. ;)

No cavaties - yay! But I'm with you on the not going back with them part. That was the hardest for me the first time I took Bryce. I wanted to see every second of it, but they swear kids do better alone. Apparently it's true!
